Fire: Keeping the Flame Ablaze

During this summer, I have spent some time clearing out a worship spot at my house in the back of our woods. I must say, I really enjoyed doing it. I wanted a spot that I could go and spend time with God in solitude. I gathered old down trees to use for seating, found various pieces of old furniture to place back there, and Tiki Torches to help keep away bugs. In the middle I built a good-sized fire pit for bonfires. The other evening I went out to that spot to spend some time with God. My brother was with me and we were trying to light the fire. The pit had quite a bit of wood in it so if we ever got it lit, it would be a very big and nice fire. The problem was we couldn’t get the fire lit.  Granted the top pieces were a little wet, but the rest of the pile was dry, so we didn’t think it would be much of a problem. We had pieces of cardboard to help start the fire, but it didn’t work. We lit some of the dry leaves in the midst of the sticks, but it didn’t work either. We even found some straw to light to help with the process, but all it did was burn. It didn’t stay lit and the fire died quickly. So finally after much frustration, we got the gasoline. Now, I realize this is not the smartest choice nor safest, but I wanted a fire! Luckily nothing bad happened! So we light a few more pieces of cardboard and paper just enough to keep it a flame for a few minutes. Then we doused the places we didn’t have lit with some gasoline so with the fire caught it, it would light up. The finally we applied the gasoline on the flames that were going and instantly, the fire went ablaze. We experienced the thrill of getting our fire lit and the fire was glorious…for about ten minutes. But soon, that gasoline had burnt away, the wood had never really caught a flame, and the fire died out again quickly. Now I realize that there are better ways to light a fire, and if I did some other things I could have probably got that fire going. However, I’m glad I tried to light the fire the way I did because God used it to teach me something.

When the fire began to die out again, I was getting kind of irritated. Then I felt God speak to my heart saying, “I need people who will tend and stir the fire, not just light it.” I immediately knew what God was saying to me. In order to keep a fire going, you have to constantly add fire to the pile, you have to stir the fire to keep the fire going, and you have to watch it. Gasoline is a nice help, but it is only a temporary fix. It only lasts for a moment. It looks glorious and the flames are huge, but they don’t have much life. God doesn’t need followers who will be like the gasoline. Who will become very passionate and devoted to God one day, and have a devotion to Him that dies at the end of the week. He wants followers who will fan the flames. Who will keep the fire going, even if that means taking longer steps in doing so. Followers who will spend the extra time in prayer, reading of His Word, and living out the life He calls His people to.

I think you would be very hard pressed to find a church, if you asked them, would not want to see people come to know Christ. I mean, that’s just a ludicrous thought. The Church may have many different denomination and beliefs of theology, but I don’t really think there are many people in the Church who do not want to see souls saved. In fact if there are any, I really think those people need to evaluate their life and see if the are in step with the Spirit. But all too often the Church tries to witness to the world with gasoline. With big and glorious displays of various ministries, emotional appeals, etc. Those of you who serve the Lord know exactly what I’m talking about. But those things don’t last. People who come to the Lord on those terms won’t last unless that fire is cultivated. Unless their flames are stirred and wood is added to the fire. If the Church and Christians want to set this world on fire, we first have to cultivate the fire in our own hearts, then also be willing to take the time to minister properly and effectively to help keep the fire lit the hearts of others as well. Jesus told His followers that they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them and they will be His witnesses. The Holy Spirit gives Christians the power to witness to others about Jesus powerfully. God is the source of that fire. I pray that believers everywhere will submit to the Holy Spirit and allow God move in their hearts. I also pray that Christians all over the world will fan into flame the gifts of God and take the steps necessary to keep that flame going. When the fire rises true and proud, the world around us will catch fire too. Don’t use the gasoline. Cultivate that fire.

“Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.” ~2 Timothy 1:6

“Fire must be kept burning on the altar continually; it must not go out.” ~Leviticus 6:13

May God be with you.

Mysteries; Great and small

WOW! Mysteries – I love em!! – Well sometimes anyway – I must admit that the mysteries of the computer make me frustrated, angry and despairing!!

But other mysteries well that’s another matter; the mystery of creation; the universe; the gobsmacking splendour of the galaxy; the rainbows; the beauty of the sunrise; the stillness of star studded skies in the wilderness, all of these can leave me breathless with heaps of unanswered questions…

There is one mystery though that I will never get my head around – and I reckon it is the GREATEST mystery of all time!!

How God saved me is one HUGE mystery and one which I will eternally grateful for.

The plan of salvation is the mystery of mysteries and shows a love that is beyond our minds to comprehend.

God paid the price for my salvation – He took me to be His prize!! Me! that is a mystery that I cannot understand.

I had nothing; proud; deceitful; jealous; I could sin and feel no compunction; hear of my guilt and remain unhumbled. Then Jesus came!

He changed my life and where I was only ever out to make life better for me, whatever the cost, He made me realise that I was bound to sin; a slave to sin; I was in chains and didn’t realise it.

If we come to Jesus, we need to come bearing no gifts; there is nothing we can bring to Him; we owe everything to Him; how then can we bring anything to Him?

It is only through his grace that we can come anywhere near him at all.

Jesus is the King of the dependent: King of the despised; King of the weak; King of the left-outs and King of the hated!

Hated? – Yes Hated; we will be hated by others if we make a stand for Jesus. Left out? Yes certainly we will be left out; not part of the crowd; even despised.

The world at large will not take too kindly to us telling them about the only way to enrich their lives for eternity is to accept the invitation that Jesus brings; Why?

Because to come to Jesus we have to empty ourselves of all we have; we need to be totally dependent on Him bringing our sins; our past; our everything and laying them at the foot of the cross.

We need to leave behind the things of earth; and not place importance on the things that really don’t matter. That was one BIG lesson I had to learn – Jesus died for us just as we are.

When He died on the cross, He took my sins up there with Him; when He died so did I in a way; died to sin; I became bound to Jesus through His death when I accepted the gift of freedom that He offered me.

The old life I had is gone – Now I have to rely solely on Him.

I don’t know what mysteries lie ahead; have no idea, really what eternity will be like; death doesn’t scare me but it is a mystery – an amazing mystery and one where I can be assured of God’s amazing promises that where He is I will be also.

I have no idea what lies ahead of me; what trials; what tribulations; what joy; what pain – but I do know whatever happens, Jesus goes before me anyway.

There is nothing that I could possibly go through that he hasn’t been there before me; and that He has promised to be with me through everything that happens.

My life is bound up in Jesus – My whole life is in Him.

The very same power that resurrected Jesus; that rolled the stone away; that killed death, is the very same power that saved me and brought me to life with Him.

Jesus paid the price for you and me. His blood bought us life.

When we are weak, then we are strong; God can’t use us when we are proud, haughty and full of our own importance. We need to be totally broken in front of Him; totally dependent on Him; giving Him the glory in everything we do.

Glorifying God is when we see God as more important than anything else we are doing or what or who is in our lives.

It is only when we humble ourselves to the His will and let the Holy Spirit infill us will be be even remotely able to kneel before a Holy God.

We have to come to a point in our lives where we realise that can do nothing on our own; all power comes from God.

We can hold nothing back thinking that God can do so much and we can do the rest; we have nothing with which to come to God save his miraculous grace by which we are saved.

It is only when we come to that realisation that He will lift us up and see us through the sacrifice of Jesus; see us washed and clean; free of sin.

Falling Away…….

Hmm falling away – can we fall away from God?

This has been the probably one of the most debated questions of all time and one which I guess each of us has our own definition.

From what I have read and gleaned out of Gods Word there are two main thoughts on this subject (probably there are heaps more when you think about it).

It is certainly not my intention to try to convince anyone either one way or the other – rather just to give a few thoughts about both ways of thinking.

I will say though that if you are thinking you have ‘gone beyond’ what God is willing to forgive and that you have committed sins so grievous there is absolutely no hope for you – then that is a pretty good pointer that the Holy Spirit isn’t finished working in your life yet.

The Holy Spirit is so long suffering, He will not give up easily. So if you are so concerned about your sins and feel you are falling away yet you still have that desire to repent and live all out for Jesus then I implore you to come back without delay. For no one can can draw us to Jesus except the Holy Spirit.

Is falling away from our faith a danger to Christians?

Hebrews 6: 4-6 says “It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit who have tasted of the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subject Him to public disgrace.”

Throughout the entire book of Hebrews we are warned that falling away from or abandoning our faith in a dangerous possibility.

So, can people drop out of their faith where there is no possibility of returning?

Some believe that you can very much lose your faith and turn your back on Jesus. They support their view by observing that these people had indeed a relationship with Christ – they had escaped sin’s consequences and the desolation of a life without Him.

Then, they have returned to a life of total sin entanglement and end up worse than they were before being converted in the 1st place.

In Matthew 7: 22-23 Jesus spoke and said “On the Judgement Day many will say to me ‘Lord Lord! In your name we spoke God’s message by Your name we drove out demons and performed many miracles.’ Then I will say to them “Depart from me I never knew you – get away from me you wicked people”.

They believe that these people are those who genuinely joined themselves with Jesus for the benefits of salvation and purely out of a motive of personal gain.

They also point out that God in His holy just way is the only one who knows when enough is enough and that their total disobedience will come to the point where there is no hope for their salvation.

On the other hand other Christians point out that when you come to Christ – you are eternally secure and cannot fall away from God’s awesome grace and all of the above are aimed fairly and squarely at those who have merely dabbled in the Word and have never taken it seriously enough to commit to it full time.

They see salvation as an irrevocable gift and can’t be taken away – they believe that these people who “fall away” just appear to be saved – they know ‘about’ Jesus and their lifestyles change but such changes are only cosmetic and superficial.

God’s Promises and assurances such as Hebrews 13:5 where the writer states “I will never leave you or forsake you” and again John 10: 29 “My father, who has given them to me, is greater than all: no one can snatch then out of my Father’s hand.”

God’s promises and assurances are there – Contradictory? certainly not – these are given to us to warn us about falling away.

Whichever way you wish to interpret, those of us who do ‘fall away’ are not those who stumble. We all have times of weakness and lapses in faith and doubt the very saving grace of Christ.

But then it is that very same grace that brings us back time and time again and each time we can get closer and closer to God our Heavenly Father.

Those who do ‘fall away’ and if I can put here “permanently’ are those who remain unrepentant and persist in open rebellion against God – knowing they are deliberately sinning and yet have no desire or intention of coming back to God.

They are likened to the very ones who crucified our Lord and are indeed crucifying Him again and again.

So Did you come to Christ because of your love for Him or because of personal gain?

Are you living contrary to what pleases God, overlooking it, justifying it and just getting on with life.

Are you using the name of Jesus but not really having any other association with Him?

If we really love God we promptly obey Him – Give Him everything, show Him absolute reverence and show humble gratefulness for his myriad blessings.

Also loving Jesus would mean that you would lay your life down for Him no longer living for yourself but living only for Him.

The White Harvest – What Jesus Did and Didn’t Say – Bible Verses

fields-white-for-harvest-john-4-35-jesus-bible-verse

The harvest field belongs to God, not to you and me. He is “the Lord of the harvest”, but we are the workers and co-laborers of the Lord. He has prepared the way for us to an abundant harvest and fruitful production in our lives.

The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest . . . to send out workers into his harvest field” Matthew.9:37-38.

God has removed the chains of the curse of sin that had weighed upon the backs of mankind since Adam fell in the garden. The weight of sin that the world had to bear has been removed once and for all by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary. All of humanity was lost, burdened by the law, stuck in the sacrifice for the temporary forgiveness of sins. Jesus in His love, with His life gave us the ultimate gift to permanently removed sin’s stain as He bore the sins of the world as he was nailed to the cross.

Before the advent of salvation we were compelled to obey God’s law, and forgiveness was given only by animal blood sacrifice for breaking that law. Thank God we are now free in Christ Jesus, saved by the sacrifice of our Lord on the cross that issued in a new age of forgiveness called Grace. This Grace in Christ Jesus has given us the freedom from sin, and the freedom to have a personal relationship with Him.

This a great article on salvation written by Darrell from Darrell Creswell’s Blog. We all need to be working in whatever way we can be to be the Holy Spirit’s helper, salvation is from God, but God desires us to spread His Word!

Consequences

Joe Long killed a man in 1941.

The Great war was horrible, terrible and to put it bluntly a bloody slaughter for all involved.

To top it all off the 2nd World War was even more terrifying then the Great war.

In world War 1 it is estimated that 10 million people died, 21 million people were wounded and 7.7 million were missing or imprisoned.

The Great War went from 1914 to 1918

The 2nd World War, 1939 – 1945 , by comparison show that more than 55 million people both civilians and military were killed

Now those are staggering facts!

But in 1941 Joe Long killed a man!

The thing is, about Joe Long, is that he killed a man, a soldier, not in war circumstances but in the height of the Blitz – that terrible, gruesome ordeal that Britons endured through 1940/1941.

He had been out fighting fires and doing what he could to help those suffering through the nightmare – the night was long and hard – filthy work – emotionally draining and depressingly sad.

It was only fitting that a few mates got together afterwards to “debrief’ with a pint or two and gather strength from each other to face the wintry prospect of yet anther nightmarish day tomorrow.

He had stayed at his friends home longer than he expected and was the last to leave – he was exhausted – he only wanted sleep as he made his way to where he hoped his home had withstood yet another tempest.

His wife of four years and their son had moved to the country where his wife’s sister had lived and he knew Lois and little Raymond were safe or as safe as they could be there. He had opted to stay and ‘hold the fort’ in London along with a handful of his mates.

They were all pretty close – they were good blokes – and like Joe they all had families and so when he rounded the corner of his street and spied this stranger looting anything he could carry from Carol, his neighbours, home without even thinking – he sprinted after him.

Carol had lost her husband in France and both her kids in the blitz and now her home had been pretty much bombed to obscurity and where she was – was anyone’s guess.

He grabbed the looter and threw him on the ground – the man screamed at Joe to let him go – he too had lost all he had to the bombs.

Something snapped inside Joe’s head – it was as if when he looked at this man all he saw were the hostilities, the dead, the blood, the bombs – everything that had torn his world apart – all manifested in this one human being!

Before he even could think twice – he began belting, kicking, bashing and screaming – the man’s head was repeatedly smashed against the pavement but Joe kept on and on – until the man lay lifeless and bloody on the street.

Joe finally came to his senses and was horrified to see what he had done – he saw the blood – the lifeless body and he panicked. He saw the dog tags – he was soldier!! what was he doing here?? Probably a deserter! – He ripped the tags off his neck and shoved them in his pocket.

An idea quickly formed in his mind – why couldn’t he be just another victim of the blitz? – he looked around – not one person in sight – most of the houses where bombed or vacant – his and two others were the only ones left, scarred but still standing in the entire street.

His idea leapt to action instantaneously – he dragged the broken and bloodied body over to the nearest shell of a house – still smoking from the countless fires and dumped it under tiles, tin and whatever he could lay his hands – done, dusted and finished.

He could so easily justify what he did in his own mind – the bloke shouldn’t have been there – he was a thief – a coward – a deserter – he deserved what he got.

Joe’s plan worked well – as far as he ever knew – the victim was just ‘another body’ pulled from the wreckage of another deserted home. After all he himself had pulled hundreds of ‘unknown’ people from the rubble and wreckage all night hadn’t he?

Years went – nothing ever said – Lois and Raymond returned to their home after the war – 2 more children came along – the street got re-built – Carol was never found – no one ever knew what became of her – another on the list of mysteries that surrounded the survivors of that horrible time.

You know – our Lord Jesus died for all of our sin – yep the whole lot – murder, deceit, lies, theft, adultery, envy, jealousy, pride, judging others and the list goes on.

All we have to do is to come to the cross – and there at the very place Jesus gave his life for us – we can drop the huge burden we have been carting around with us – sometimes for years – and leave it there with Jesus.

He has said so plainly that WHOEVER comes to me I will never drive away. (John 6:37).

On saying all that – and praising God for His amazing forgiveness – we are still human and we still sin – none of us will ever be truly immuned from sin until the great day when Jesus will come back again.

Also…

There will be consequences for past sin in our lives – Consequences that sometimes need to be accounted for.

Consequences can be good. Like meeting the living Jesus face to face – amazing and life-giving freedom and an eternity with Him – pretty good consequences there!

But…

Some consequences can be bad – if for example we fool around with sex, being with others and sleeping around – then the consequences could be total alienation from our families – broken marriages – loss of trust – sexually transmitted diseases and so on.

Being a Christian in these circumstances won’t stop the consequences of our sin! Yes we may be forgiven but we still have to bear those consequences.

God is so willing to forgive and YES forget – He doesn’t want us to have guilty consciences and really there is no room for guilt with Jesus – and as far as He is concerned the traces of our past sins are gone BUT sometimes the consequences and results of our past can mar our lives here on earth.

Well, Joe lived a pretty good life after the war – yes things were tight – what with work and food shortage, but finally he snared a job and things started on the up and up.

But – he never quite forgot!

Thirty years later – Joe heard of the amazing forgiveness of Jesus – he and Lois were both transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit – They both realised that they needed to hand their lives entirely over to Jesus – holding nothing back!

They joined a church where they grew in their faith – the boys could see a huge difference in their Mum and Dad – they were in awe of how much they had changed – Where dad had always been loving and supporting, now he was joyful and helpful – always willing to give to others – opening their home to strangers.

It wasn’t long before the boys and their own families had given their lives to Jesus as well – all seemed so good.

BUT…

The consequences of past sin was there – Joe knew it and he also knew that he would have to put it right. He searched and found the dead mans tags – and he knew what he must do!

He must first tell the family – and then the police!

That night when he assembled all the family together – he told them his story – the blitz – the carnage – the night of terror and then the murder!

Surprisingly for Joe – they were all supportive of their Dad – Lois was in tears and couldn’t help but feel betrayed – the boys, shocked and dumbfounded listened in quietness as their dad unfolded the truth to them.

Thirty years of pent-up guilt came rushing out as Joe told is story.

The very next day – The family accompanied their Dad to a solicitors office and then to the police where Joe confessed to the killing of Private fist class James Alexander Cotterill.

The body of James Cotterill was never identified and was unable to be located – Joe was convicted of the crime of manslaughter and James Cotterill’s family were informed as to what happened to their relative all those years previously.

Joe was sent to prison for an extended time but finally rejoined his family.

You know, there is no room for guilty consciences when we come and truly confess our sins to Jesus – He does forgive and He does forget – Our sins have been purged – washed away – we are clean – God looks at us and sees the sacrifice that Jesus made all those years ago on Calvary.

Jesus took the punishment for our sins – killed them on the cross – we are free from their guilt and their punishment.

Although consequences of our past can spoil relationships here on earth and sometimes we have to pay a heavy price – that will not stop the awesome love of God to transform and permanently change us.

Consequences of our past can be positive but unfortunately negative as in our story – they can enhance or mar our lives and those around us – Don’t let negatives consequences in your life spoil an amazing relationship with your God and King.

All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

The Blood of Jesus Christ

I started reading a book by Watchman Nee called Normal Christian Life. So far I have only read the first chapter, but within that first chapter something really stuck out to me. He said “a clear conscience is never based upon our attainment; it can only be based on the work of the Lord Jesus in the shedding of His Blood”. The entire first chapter is about the Blood of Jesus Christ and how it applies to the life of a Christian. I thought that the chapter laid out beautifully what the Blood of Christ truly means to us as followers of Christ.

The chapter starts first by pointing out that the Blood of Jesus really isn’t so much for us, as it is for God. Now at first reading you may say, “Hold on a minute, the Blood of Christ is what saves me!” Yes that is very true and Nee is not dismissing that very important truth. What he means is that the only way God pardons our sin is if He sees the Blood of Jesus paying for the debt of our sin. Think about the Israelites when God commanded them to eat the Passover lamb inside the house, but spread the blood of the lamb on the doorposts. Then, when God passed over Egypt on the Passover night, God would see the blood and pardon the household. This is the same with us and the Blood of Christ. When God sees the Blood of Christ applied to our hearts, He can forgive and pardon our sin because of the great sacrifice of Jesus. So consequently, the amount we value Christ’s Blood is directly linked to the value that God values the Blood.

After realizing the value of the Blood, it is crucial that we base our life around that. Without the Blood of Christ, we can not go into the Presence of God without fear and shame. On the Day of Atonement in the Old Testament, the high priest alone was to go into the Most Holy Place to offer the sin offering to God. As it is with Christ. He is our High Priest who applies His blood to our sin to make retribution before God. When we allow this to become true in our everyday life, then it shapes our entire relationship with God. Some days I can feel really connected with God. I read my Bible and get a lot out of my reading. I feel like really connect with God in prayer and hear from Him. I am able to reflect the love of Christ well. I feel like I’m serving God well. Other days, it can be just the opposite. I don’t feel the same connection during my Bible reading or prayer time. I don’t reflect Christ’s love well. I may be mean or nasty. But listen to this: our standing before God is not based on our works, our merits, how we feel, or anything we can furnish. It is by the Blood of Jesus that we are able to be seen as forgiven by God!Do not allow the way you feel ditate how you think your relationship with God is based. It is only by the Blood of Jesus that we have relationship with God!

It is very easy as Christians to allow ourselves to get beat up when we fall short of the glory of God. We believe the lie that we have to earn our way into God’s love or we have to preform for God to be accepted. But praise be to God that it’s not about what I  can do, it’s about what I can’t do. Only Jesus can bring me back into restored relationship with Jesus. When we try to base our status with God on anything other than the sacrificial Blood of Jesus, we play right into Satan’s schemes.  The Bible calls Satan the Accuser. His tricks aren’t new. He has used the same tricks all through history; lying and accusing. He will try to accuse us of our sin before God and lie to us saying that we are failures and can’t be forgiven. By ourselves, we are failures and we can’t be forgiven. We can’t save ourselves. But by the Blood of Jesus I am redeemed and by His grace I can be pardoned of all my sin!

I pray that as you read this blog, you will ponder in your own heart whether or not you are applying the Blood of Jesus to your life. Does it really impact your everyday life, or is it more than a passing thought. I encourage as the Lord to reveal more of Himself to you, and share His value of His Son’s Blood with you. As always, I pray this blog encourages you or helps you! Blessings!

The Virgin Birth of Messiah

Most people have probably heard the story about Jesus’ birth. Here’s Luke’s account:

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

There’s something about the birth of Messiah that’s somewhat controversial, even among some Christians. It shouldn’t be, but it is. Many ask, “Was Mary actually a virgin? Was the birth of Jesus truly a virgin birth?” Well let me take you back a few hundred years before Jesus Christ was born.

Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

Isaiah clearly prophesies a virgin birth here. The original Hebrew word that was used for “virgin” here is “almah.” This Hebrew word means a “young, unmarried woman who has had no sexual relations.”

The angel, Gabriel, appears to Mary in the book of Luke. Luke 1:26-38 says:

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

Notice that Mary tells Gabriel that she is a virgin. She wants to know how she will give birth to a child if she has never been with a man.

My point is this: The Messiah MUST be born of a virgin. It was prophesied by Isaiah hundreds of years before Jesus was born. Hundreds of years before the book of Luke was written. It was something that had to be fulfilled. Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. If Mary had not been a virgin, Jesus would not have been Messiah. Without the virgin birth, there is no Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus the Messiah), no Savior, and we are completely lost. But Jesus fulfilled ALL of the prophesied requirements for the Messiah. Jesus born of a virgin. That fact is essential to the Christian faith.

“Jesus was born that you might be born again. He lived that you might live. He died that you might die to sin.” ~Spurgeon

Christmas: The Day Hope Was Born into the World

For may people, Christmas means a lot of things. For some, it means lots of shopping, traveling, and scrambling all over town to get those special gifts for special people. For others, it may mean getting together with family that they are unable to see throughout the year. These are great things. There is nothing wrong with wanting to get special people gifts. It is greatly important as well to spend time with family. However, Christmas marks a day much more important than gifts or family. It celebrates the day that God sent Hope back into the world.

Picture this. From the time the prophet Malachi, which is the last recorded Old Testament book, to the time of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) there was 400 years of silence. God’s chose Israel as His chosen people. Starting with Abraham, God promised a linage that would never perish and would bless all people. Abraham descendants were enslaved by Egypt for over 400 years, when God sent a leader, Moses, to bring them out of Egypt. After leaving the bondage of Egypt, Israel remained faithful to God for a time. Unfortunately, the longer Israel lived around the pagan nations, the more they grew into to practices of those nations. They eventually started worshipping and serving dead idols rather than the one, true living God. God began sending prophets to various parts of Israel. Those prophets began speaking the words of God and pleading for people to turn back to the Lord. Eventually Israel, was broke into two nations (Israel and Judah). Israel was wiped out by the Assyrians and Judah was taken into captivity by Babylon for 70 years. The prophets began giving snapshots of a Messiah that was to come and lead God’s people and save them. After the people of Judah were liberated from Babylon, the people turned back to God. But their worship to God became nothing more than dead religion. So with the last of the prophets, Malachi, God did not speak to Israel for almost 400 years.

The people of Israel, however, still held on to the hope of the coming Messiah. Although the Pharisees of that time taught hypocrisy, there were still those in Israel who were looking forward to the coming Messiah. Then one day, prophecy started being fulfilled. The forerunner of Messiah spoken about in Isaiah, “A voice is calling, ‘Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; make smooth in the desert a highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3), John the Baptist, was born. Not too much later, Jesus, conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born in Bethlehem by the virgin Mary, in a manager because there was no place in the town inn. This fulfilled the Scripture that said, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,Mighty God,Everlasting Father,Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Hope came back into the world when Jesus was born. Jesus came and ministered to all of Israel, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again three days later from the grave, overcoming death. He not only paid the ransom for Israel, but opened up the door of salvation to all who believe in His name an turn from their sin. He now seated at the right hand of God and He will return for His Church.

Jesus came in the most humble of ways. He came as a baby. He didn’t come in with an army. He didn’t come in as a conquering king. He came as a baby, in human form, to relate to us and give us hope that once seemed lost. So this Christmas season, really reflect on the fact that Jesus chose to step out of divinity, and live as a human only to be hung on a cross for the sin of the world. I encourage you to read the Birth of Christ in the book of Matthew and Luke. When you are unwrapping your gifts, spending time with family, and eating hearty meals, remember Jesus this year. Jesus is the reason for the season. Truly.

The book of Acts is a tremendously important book in the life of a Christian believer. It contains some of the earliest history of the early church and provides great information about the church’s growth. Such rich information about the history of the Christian faith should be treasured! Acts serves as a connector or bridge between the Gospels and the Epistles of the New Testament, providing great historical and introduction information to the Pauline Epistles. Without the book of Acts, Christians would be left with many unanswered questions about the New Testament such as who were the authors, what happened after Jesus returned to the rather, and how did the church start? Clearly, Acts has an irreplaceable spot in the Biblical canon.

The book of Acts also provides information about a crucial event in Christian history, Pentecost. This book is unrivaled in its information about the work of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Spirit, and the functions of the Spirit’s gifts operated in the life of a Christian. “Pentecostal theology appears elsewhere in the New Testament; however, any Pentecostal theology founded without the full benefit of the book of Acts would be severely impoverished”. It is often stated the book should be named “Acts of the Holy Spirit” because of the many circumstances that the Holy Spirit guided the early church and made a way for the advancement of the church.

It is true that the actions of a person stems out of what they believe. Some want to separate faith and practice, but this is not consistent with the Bible. The Bible uses positive and negative examples all throughout the Scriptures to illustrate lifestyles affected by beliefs. Historical information is meant to guide future generations into right living, and the book of Acts is no different. The material found in Acts is meant to guide Christians in their walk with the Lord and help them understand what they believe.

There are many theological and hermeneutical emphases found in the book of Acts. One main theological theme found in Acts is the continuity of the Holy Spirit’s activity. From the very beginning of the book, the Holy Spirit shows up and shakes up the life of believers. After the day of Pentecost, the Spirit inspired such boldness and passion in the hearts of Peter and John that they went out to preach in the synagogues of the city. The people were amazed at their teachings (much like they were at the teachings of Jesus) and recognized the authority in their words because it came with power from the Holy Spirit (Acts 3). The Spirit continued to guide the church and grow the church all throughout the book of Acts.

Another emphasis is that of the redemptive-historical perspective. This attempts to understand each verse, passage, and book of the Bible in the scope of God’s overall sovereign plan. This theology seeks to focus on the unity of the entire Biblical message and necessarily individual stories. The focus is events in history unfolding in God’s perfect timing. A great example from Acts can be found when Jesus tells his disciples, “wait for the gift my Father promised…you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:4-5). The disciples had not yet received the Spirit nor had they went out preaching the name of Jesus because it was not time for them to do so. The time would be right when God was ready to carry out His plan, which can be seen in Acts 2.

A third emphasis, but certainly not the last, in the book of Acts is the primary role of the Holy Spirit. Over the years many viewpoints have been presented about what the role of the Spirit really is. The Holy Spirit has been said to be an agent of holiness, empowering the believer for service, and increasing the intimacy of relationship between Jesus and the believer. All of these things are true and the Holy Spirit certainly works in sanctifying a believer and creating a deeper relationship with Christ, the book of Acts is undeniable in defining the primary role of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8). The primary role of the Spirit according to the book of Acts is to empower the believer for service and to make greater witnesses.

Luke, the author of Acts, included theology and practice in historical-narrative that can be seen all throughout the book’s entirety. One of the most obvious methods that should be observed is that Luke wrote Acts much like the format of the Old Testament book of history. In the Old Testament, there are statements made by monumental figures that were intended to affect the practice and beliefs of those who read the books. “A look at Acts and the Old Testament accounts for many features of Acts. There is evidence that in writing Acts, Luke used Biblical language and models.”

By looking at the writings of Luke, it is clear that Luke intends to be more than just an observer or historian. Although he makes sure to record the events of history accurately, even if it means illustrating bad qualities in the early church, he also adds editorials to his work. He gives clues in his writings that reveal whether he approves or disapproves with the characters that he is narrating. Luke wants not only for his readers to learn accurate history, but also come to conclusions about the actions depicted in his writings and whether or not they are just. Pentecostals draw much theology and practice from the book of Acts and would be at a terrible loss if it were not appropriate to do so.

As valuable as drawing theology and practice from the book of Acts is to the Christian believer, it is important to exercise correct methods of doing so. It is quite possible to draw things from the book that the author never intended. When reading Acts, extra attention must be given in the clues that Luke left to illuminate what he intended for the reader to learn. An example is his tendency to report things repeatedly or report things that are similar several times. It is most likely that Luke wanted to reader to find extreme importance in those instances and repeated those things for emphasis. Again, one must not read deeper into the narrative than Luke intended. It may be tempting to add things or draw conclusions about certain topics with vague description, but such practice can potentially harm interpretation and must be avoided.

When you wish upon a star

Disney’s all time No 1 Favourite song ever is – “When You Wish Upon a Star” – WOW – magical lyrics and that tune!!! Man it’s no wonder everyone loves it.

So here we go:-

“When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do…..”

Lovely!!

You know – we all wish!! – we wish for this we wish for that – and I guess there is absolutely nothing wrong in wishing!

Poor old Geppetto the puppeteer longed so much for a little boy of his own – so he made Pinocchio. Then he wished Pinocchio would come to life – just like a ‘real’ boy – so he “Wished upon a star.”

The rest is history – the “Blue Fairy” the “Song” the little wooden boy coming to life. How marvellous!

But it was brought home to me just recently that sometimes wishing can be dangerous.

Some people seemingly live their lives in a fantasy world – wishing and dreaming and hoping (just like another song I’ve heard)- happy to float along – never really committing to anything – always dreaming of a ‘better’ life with more money or better looks or a bigger car or winning lotto etc etc.

Wishing can lead to regrets as well – “I wish I hadn’t done that” or “I wish I had said this.”

Like Geppetto we look dreamily out of windows and wish upon stars in our lives not really understanding life and missing out on the biggest opportunity of all time.

There is no room for wishing, regrets and guilty consciences after we have come to Jesus – How amazing is that?

Jesus promises us a guilt-free life, full of His awesome promises, and it’s all free – price paid by Him.

But instead of accepting His awesome gift, we prefer something more ostentatious, more flimsy, more flamboyant – we prefer to put our faith and hope in temporal things – things that won’t last but will give us a buzz anyway.

A new home, a new car, clothes, jewellery, furniture – all give us temporary happiness and we think – Yes! now I will be happy – My stars have come in for me.

When we do have problems or trials we prefer to consult our friends, employees, financial advisers and yes, even the stars. Anything that will make us comfortable and feeling good – even temporarily!

As long as our positive self-image is well fed and our self confidence and self assurance is at an all time high, for outward appearances anyway, we can manage.

And so we dream/stumble/claw/fantasise our way through life – making do with second best – jumping from one “high” to another – trying not to think too hard about the real issues in life.

Jesus came to do away with all that – this world is only a stop on our way to Heaven.

Peter, that disciple who denied Jesus said in his first epistle 2: 11-12 “Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which wars against your soul”

Then Paul writes in Philippians 3:20 “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

So how about our life here on earth? Well…. God made it for us to enjoy and we definitely live here – there is no denying that!

But it was through our sinful lives that has spoilt God’s amazing creation. That is why Jesus had to come to earth, and die to atone, compensate or make amends, if you like, for our rebellion against God.

When we repent, turn away from, be truly sorry for our sins and accept His forgiveness as being the only way to a complete and full acceptance of Jesus being our Lord and Saviour, then we become new People.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5: 17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

After we have accepted this awesome gift, then we become citizens of Heaven and our new home is there rather than here on earth.

So let’s get our mind off earthly things which will give us ‘temporary’ happiness at best. We can only find true happiness in God – we don’t have to go wishing on a star – we don’t have to depend on anything this world offers – we can have treasures abounding and unlimited in Heaven.
