Exodus 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
Today as I was reading verses and getting them ready to post on Twitter I read this one. A few thoughts instantly hit me about this verse.
The Israelites were to kill a lamb and eat it in the prescribed manner, and place the blood of the lamb on the door-posts. Then when the angel of the Lord passed by their home and saw the blood of the sacrificial lamb – the angel would not kill the first-born as was done with the Egyptian first-born. This was of course the Passover.
Blood has always had significant importance, such as when the Israelites sacrificed animals for the covering of sin, when Noah sacrificed animals to the Lord after leaving the ark. In Hebrews 9:22 it says: And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
In Genesis 4:9-10 God asks Cain where his brother Able is and says the blood of Able cries out to Him. In Deuteronomy 12:23 God commands that the blood be not eaten as it IS the life.
Then there is today – the blood of Christ was and is the last sacrifice needed. Rather than door-posts, the blood of Christ covers us – our sins and we are saved from the plague – which is our sin. Hallelujah!
