The Whimsy of Words

Words are intriguing. Have you ever thought about it? They play an influential role in the fabric of human interaction. They come in many different forms, but still hold the same amount of power. One of the most fascinating traits is that (metaphorically speaking) you can’t touch a word…but it can touch you! It can reach down into the very depths of your soul, and sometimes unconsciously. Do we realize the amount of substantial significance that our words carry? They seep into our psyche. They have an impact on our minds.

The bible has plenty to say about our words and the impact that they make. James 3:3-5 says, “We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.” Remarkably, something as small and seemingly insignificant as the tongue can instill life or death inside of another individual. Don’t believe me? Check the scriptures.

James 3:7-10 “People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!”

Proverbs 16:24 “Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

Proverbs 12:25 “Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.”

I am a personal testament to this. I can’t even begin to express the several occasions where a simple, kind and genuine word from a friend literally changed the entire course of my day. Unfortunately, the same has happened from a negative aspect as well. Can you relate?

I would like to conclude this post with a call to be divine craftsmen with our words. Handling them with the full potential and power that we know they contain. Using delicate thought and intricate consideration so that we honor Christ with absolutely everything that we write and say.

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.~ Ephesians 4:29
