The Importance of Planning Ahead

Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house. – Proverbs 24:27 (NIV)

When it comes to planning for the future some of us forge ahead without making sure that we have all we need in order to carry out the plan.  We don’t bother to check on numerous factors that could derail our plan at any time.  We just dive in at the deep end and hope for the best.

In many aspects of life, having a good plan is paramount.  No matter what goal or dream it is you are trying to achieve, many people recommend or advise you to have some sort of plan.  Having a good plan in many ways is just the beginning.

When you write a plan of action for achieving your goals, you see in front of you something that makes the goal seem more tangible.  Instead of it being in your mind, it is out in the open where you can see it with your eyes.  For some, seeing is believing because you have moved it from being a dream in your mind to something more realistic and maybe even achievable.

In order for your goal to be achievable, you have to work out whether or not you have the resources and/or knowledge available to carry it out.  If you are lacking any of the vital aspects needed to make your goal a reality, you have to get them.  You have to make preparations.  If you are not prepared then achieving your goals may take longer or may never happen.

One of the first things you have to do in order to be prepared is to seek God and find out if it is something He wants you to do.  In fact, right from the beginning as soon as the goal is determined, you should be seeking God’s guidance.  It is no use creating a plan of action if God isn’t in it.  As you continue to pray and seek God, the goal will gradually transform and in a way become more than you originally thought it would be.

Planning ahead and being prepared is mentioned numerous times in the Bible.  There are stories about people planning in advance for famines, wars and building structures.  Some of these stories illustrate that without adequate planning and preparation, your endeavours may be doomed to failure.

If the goal still seems impossible, even after writing down a plan of action and carrying out preparations, you need to remember that with God all things are possible and you don’t have to be worried about the what ifs that will arise as you put your plan into action.  A God approved plan will have His blessing and He will be with us as we carry it out.

It is very important to plan ahead and commit that plan to God.  To achieve this, we have to trust God and ask for the wisdom we need to carry out our plans.  The Lord will guide us by establishing the path and opening the doors we need to achieve our goals.  Even if our plans are not what He wants for us, He will show and give us a plan that will work out for own good and reflect the glory of His kingdom.

A good plan involves good preparation and one hundred percent trust in God…

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Luke 21:36 "Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man."
