Respecting Your Parents

Adrian Rogers

Whether you are young or old, every child can honor his or her parents. You do it by showing respect. Leviticus 19:3 says, “Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep My sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.”

Now that word “fear” doesn’t mean to quake in their presence. It’s a word that means to reverence, like “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7). That is, you are to have a holy respect for your father and your mother.

Proverbs 30:17 says, “The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.”

You say, “But my parents are not worthy of respect.” Only perfect children can demand perfect parents, and no children are perfect. But God is holy, and God says that you are to respect your parents.
