Girding Up The Loins Of Your Mind

1 Peter 1:13-16 exhorts, “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

The Bible tells us to “gird up the loins of our mind.” What does that mean? In Bible times, men wore long, flowing robes. When they were going to work, to plow, or to fight, they would pull up the loose ends of their robes and tie a rope around the folds at their waists. They would do this so as not to be encumbered and trip.

Now your mind is like that—you have a lot of loose ends, don’t you? In order to have a quiet time, you have to get mentally ready, morally pure, and physically alert. When we come into the presence of our holy, loving God, we need to come expecting great things.

Emotion doesn’t have all that much to do with it. God will be there. Getting all wet around the lashes and warm around your heart doesn’t bring God any closer than He already is when you call out His name.
